There’s only one correct way to pour a Guinness.

It’s a two-step process that takes about 119.5 seconds (yes, they’re that specific about it). The glass is tilted at 45 degrees. The beer is poured until it’s about three-quarters full. Then you wait. The bubbles rise. The dark body separates from the creamy head. Only after it settles do you top it off.

Why all the drama? There are a couple of interesting reasons why:

Back in the 1930s, bartenders had to combine beer from two separate kegs, one highly conditioned and one lightly conditioned, to get the balance just right. That meant pouring in stages to control the carbonation and create the smooth texture people expected.

Guinness uses nitrogen instead of just carbon dioxide. Nitrogen bubbles are smaller, giving it a smooth, velvety texture. But it also means it needs time to settle. If you rush it, you ruin the balance.

Lastly, the pour method was designed and has become a celebrated part of the brand's heritage, integral to the ritual and experience.

And honestly? That’s not a bad lesson for our financial lives.

Most money mistakes happen because we don’t like waiting. We see a “hot” investment. We feel market panic. We want quick returns. We make emotional decisions. That’s the fast pour. It looks exciting for a second… and then it’s just foam.

The slow pour teaches something different.

First, there’s intention. The tilt of the glass matters. In finance, that’s your plan. Without direction, things spill or are filled in a less-than-desirable way.

Second, there’s patience. During that pause while the beer settles, nothing looks like it’s happening. But beneath the surface, physics is doing its job. Investing can feel like that, too. Sometimes it feels like nothing is happening. But time allows things to separate and stabilize.

Good financial decisions are about being disciplined. They’re about letting things settle instead of reacting to every headline.

This March, while everyone’s celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, take a second to appreciate the slow pour. Because wealth, like a proper pint, is built on patience, process, and a little bit of science.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
